On April 10, 2018 at approximately 7:50am, Deschutes County 911 received a call of a male climber that had fallen within Smith Rock State Park.  The male had fallen within the area of Misery Ridge.

Deschutes County deputies along with EMS responded and determined that the male subject was deceased.  Witnesses reported the subject was alone and had gone up the Misery Ridge Trail.  They reported hearing a subject yell and saw the male fall from the top of the Misery Ridge Trail.  The subject was not actively engaged in climbing at the time of the incident but was equipped with climbing rope, harness, and other gear.

Preliminary investigation shows this to be an accidental fall of approximately 200 feet.  Twelve Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to assist in removing the subject due to the difficult terrain.  The subject’s identification is withheld pending notification of next of kin.
